In the book Animal Farm Orwell shows us that power corrupts those who possess it through the character Napoleon by showing us he is selfish, manipulative, and abusive. Napoleon likes to do things and worry for his own good and not worry that much about his citizens. Under the rule of the Soviet Union, Stalin succeeded in creating a society where those within the government such as himself were held above everyone else.

He developed a plan anchored around controlling the economy and the forced collection of Soviet agriculture. Stalin incited the Great Purge, in which a series of campaigns were designed to rid Russia of the Communist party and other parts of society he deemed a threat.

Joseph Stalin took the lives of over 20 million people in the Soviet Union during his rule. Stalin took over after the Russian Revolution and quickly gained absolute power and became corrupted and worse than the old ruler, Tsar Nicholas.

The novella Animal Farm, a satirical fable by Eric Blair, who writes under the pseudonym of George Orwell, parallels this. Orwell depicts the Russian Revolution in a bad light, portraying Stalin as an overweight, greedy boar.

Although Moses is a follower, his behavior differs from that of the other animals. As Karl Marx famously stated, "Religion is the opium of the people," and Moses' tales of Sugarcandy Mountain likewise serve as an opiate to the animals' misery.
