Where is microphone on thinkpad t400

I have checked the volumes in Alsa Mixer and set them all to full. Any help would be very much appreciated! Does an external microphone work? If so, I would suspect that the internal pick has a physical problem and that they "sleep" item is a coincidence. One test you might try is to boot to a Live CD of something non-Debian related and test the microphone with that. If the mic still doesn't work, it's almost certainly a hardware problem.

I did not solve this problem but ended up reinstalling Linux due to other problems tangentially related to the mic problem. I knew there was not a hardware problem because it worked fine under Windows.

I think reinstalling Linux to solve such a problem might be a bit extreme. I've never found a hardware problem that required a reinstall to solve.

I have been in and out of, I think, every Ubuntu forum page talking about microphone issues; but nothing has worked yet. Although I have tried a million things, I can't remember most of them and would like to start from the beginning. Simple things like "is it muted" are also warrented, but I have checked and it is not muted in alsamixer, pavucontrol or gnome-alsamixer.
