Jesus took the five loaves and two fish and looked up to heaven, blessing them, before breaking the food. Then he gave the food to the disciples, who in turn gave it to the crowds of people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve baskets full of leftovers. And although there are minor differences in the telling from gospel to gospel, they are all broadly similar on the detail. And, well, feeding four thousand people is nowhere near as impressive as five thousand, right?
This miracle also mentions four thousand men , with women and children not included in the total. When it came time for the evening meal, there was nothing for people to eat, other than five loaves of bread and two fish.
From these, however, Jesus was able to provide ample food for the whole crowd. He miraculously multiplied the quantity of food so that everyone was well fed and there were twelve baskets of leftovers.
Jesus cared for the people in their ordinary hunger and demonstrated loving hospitality. Yet, like the healings, the miracle of feeding also demonstrated the presence of the kingdom of God. It echoed the familiar story of God providing manna for the children of Israel as they journeyed through the wilderness Exod. And it began to fulfill Old Testament prophetic promises, such as are found in Isaiah:. It will be a delicious banquet with clear, well-aged wine and choice meat.
There he will remove the cloud of gloom, the shadow of death that hangs over the earth. He will swallow up death forever!
He will rule with a powerful arm. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes. He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He asks them to find food which they did by finding the boy. The second one is that Jesus uses His children to help others.
He encourages a simple boy to help a crowd of 5, through his five loaves of bread and fish. We can just imagine what amazement the boy had when his simple treasures become the reason for the crowd to be fed. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.
He did the same with the fish. Let nothing be wasted. John By Jesus using the disciples and the boy to bless others, we are reminded that God uses us to bless others as well. There are many times when we are asked by God to help others in need and this is similar to the very scenario that happened during the Feeding of the five thousand.
When God asks us to be a blessing to others, we must have faith, and to do even just a simple amount or act, can have a huge impact on so many lives. Another lesson that we can learn from the Feeding of the five thousand is that Jesus is big enough for any of our expectations. But it is in His feeding the 5, that we see an example of how powerful Jesus is. He merely commands that the food be fed and, as a result, the 5, people were fed. Scholars even believe that it could have been more than 5, He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.
Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. Commentaries for Luke John He did the same with the fish. Let nothing be wasted.
